Top 8 Thrifting Tips From Your Friendly Native New Yorker.

So you want to start thrifting, ay’? I am a believer that everyone should become part of the #thriftsquad – not only is it budget friendly, but in a world where mass production is the norm, thrifting is one of the easiest ways to help promote recycling. To help with your new vintage venture, or to expand your strategy of thrifting, here a few of my favorite thrifting tips:

SLOW & STEADY ALWAYS WIN.

Patience is a virtue. It may seem weird that I have patience as the first tip for thrifting, but in order to find those gems your friends are always flaunting, you need to be okay with committing a chunk of time to browse and shop. The best pieces are always the ones that are hidden. Be ready to spend a few hours, a full afternoon or evening, dedicated to searching through used clothes. It’s totally worth it, promise.

DIGGIN’ DAYS AREN’T OVER.

When thrifting, it’s okay to check every single hanger from every single section. This is a part of the equation in finding those gem pieces. That funky little boys graphic can totally work as your new go-to crop. & Those men tees are PERFECT for the latest oversized-tee-as-dresses trend. The whole store is your playground, go ahead and dig for days.

ENERGY TIP.

If you’re like me, you are extremely dedicated to making sure you are never hangry, ever. Going thrifting is no excuse to ditch breakfast or lunch. This is actually the perfect opportunity to catch up with your home girl who you haven’t seen in almost a year. Brunch date & thrifting? Yes and yes. Oh, and of course keeping snacks in your bag is a MUST. Nuts and granola are my go-to snacks, they always provide that little boost of energy.

BASIC IS OKAY WHEN THRIFTING.

I hate feeling basic, especially when it comes to my outfit choices. However, when dressing basic, it is easier to try things on over your clothes. My typical go-to outfit is tights and a cami/fitted top. Feel free to add a spunky outerwear piece to keep you from crying about the basic look; trust me though, it’ll definitely be easier for those thrift shops that have no fitting rooms. Thank you, Salvation Army.

WILL WE MEET AGAIN?

Try to imagine if you’re really going rock that dress, top or pants more than once. This is a general shopping tip, but it’s one that I love to emphasize when thrifting because when something’s only a buck or two, it’s easy to say “Why not?” I’m guilty of this too and it’s something I’m still trying to work on. If you can’t imagine at least 3 different ways to style one piece, say no!

I CAVED: BUT IT WAS ONLY A DOLLAR!

One of my favorite things to do when I realize that I haven’t worn a piece of clothing at all is posting it up on the selling app Poshmark. Here, you can swap or sell your clothes with fellow gals who are also dealing with overflowing closets. #thestruggleisreal It’s a great way to join the revolution on recycling your clothes, and the extra cash never hurts. There are a few other apps, too: depop and vinted are a few other popular ones. If you think your pieces are vintage shop worthy – you can even create an entire Etsy page dedicated to your one-of-a-kind vintage finds. The possibilities are truly endless.

TRADING LOCALLY.

If you have a great group of gal pals, feel free to trade amongst each other. You never know the treasures that are hiding in your besties closet.

DIY.

One of my favorite ways to force myself to wear a random piece that I have yet to rock is definitely customizing it to my liking. Distressing denim, cropping tees, adding patches and bleaching can really make you want to show off that one-of-a-kind piece all the time. I don’t know about you, but I LOVE rocking DIY’ed clothing – it’s one of the coolest ways to rock your personality.

I hope you find that your next thrift trip is successful after reading this list of tips. Do you have any tips not listed here? Feel free to list them in the comment section down below! I’m always down with trying out new tricks at the thrift shop!

Bad Boyfriend.

Happy Friday:

BaboonSpoon
Top: Old Navy.

Off-the-shoulder is definitely one of my favorite trends this season. It’s literally all over the runaways and street style blogs. There’s just something inevitably delicate about exposed shoulders – it’s dreamy.

I’ve been dying to get my hands on a perfect off-the-shoulder top to style endlessly this spring/summer season. I found this one at my job for less than 20 bucks! I love how dainty white can be & with the added ruffle, it has the ultimate boho vibe.

Necklace: DeadGypsy & Co. ; Earrings: Thrifted ; Headscarf: Local Store.

Denim: Target.

To style this top, I decided to pair it with boyfriend jeans. I honestly love being able to flaunt feminine vibes with loose fitting clothing. There’s just something so powerful about being able to feel beautiful in non-fitting clothing. Am I the only one who feels that way?

Wedges: Steve Madden

I wore my Steve Madden wedges to give my outfit a more clean feel. With all of the bagginess going on, the contrast from the shoes is what ties the look together. I added casual accessories to keep my outfit brunch date appropriate – beaded jewelry is always my go to! I simply love how sassy jewelry can make you feel: it’s the world of sassy self expression! Headscarves have been really fun to incorporate into my outfits, too. I need to pick up a few more and start playing around with different designs. This headscarf game is real.

How would you style this off-the-shoulder top? Let me know in the comment section down below!

Flower Power.

Happy Friday:

‘Tis the season of florals!

sidewayschola

Since the weather has gotten warmer in the past 2 weeks or so, I have been on my a-game as far as getting dressed in the morning goes. There’s just something about the spring weather that lifts up my overall mood – I feel free and ready to soar!

I was recently sent some handcrafted jewelry from an Etsy Shop called Lovely Folds. I met the designer/owner through my YouTube channel – she stumbled upon one of my videos & since then, we’ve have been chatting every so often. It was extremely kind of her to send me a few goodies – blogging about it was my first thought.

Oh, & I’m also excited because this is my first Spring related outfit post.

I wanted this outfit to be super girly while still embodying a free spirit vibe. My favorite thing about this outfit is the fact that almost all of the pieces are thrifted. Specifically, the dress, denim jacket and shoes are all thrifted. I’ve been wanting to rock these shoes for a bit and thought it matched perfectly with the delicate florals on the dress. To keep things classic, I threw on a medium wash denim jacket.

For accessories, I went with my straw floppy hat from Forever 21 because it’s going to be a necessity for protecting my baldie head from the UV rays. As for the baby scarf,  they’re my new obsession. I have a trillion of ’em! My mom first gave these to me back when I was a preteen but I never had the confidence to rock ’em. She dropped them off a few weeks ago & I immediately wanted to add them to all of my outfits! They scream Spring!

My favorite jewelry piece has to be the Geometric Origami Earrings. I love how they have such spunk, especially with the black and white color combo. The cat earrings are super cute and the necklace is such a fun piece. These are small details that would really add some personality to any basic outfit! Or it can be the added funk to your already funky outfit – it’s perfect.

I’m noticing that my style is slowly changing, becoming a lot more mature and I couldn’t be more excited to be experiencing this growth. Especially fashion wise. Stay tuned – I have a lot more outfits, lookbooks and styling videos in the works.

Be sure to check out Lovely Folds Etsy shop – prices are super inexpensive, the quality is superb and the pieces are made with real love! What more could you ask for?

Thank you again, Irene, for sending me these pieces. I’ve been wearing them nonstop!

Thank you for stopping by,

Denim Jacket Lookbook: Fall ’15 | Video

Happy Friday:

Denim is a fashion essential. That’s a known fact.

No matter what your style is, there is at least one piece of denim in your closet. It could be bottoms, tops, outerwear, or if you’re really funky, maybe even a handbag or purse. It’s a classic fabric.

I live in skinny jeans, but I cannot deny the love I have for denim jackets. There are unlimited possibilities on how you can style a denim jacket. Since I am a city gal, the urban vibes denim jackets tend to ooze off perfectly suits me. It’s one of my go to pieces, and have been for the past few years now.

I filmed a denim jacket lookbook back in April, which you can watch here, and had so much fun filming, editing & styling it. Since denim jackets are super versatile, i decided to do it again this fall season.

In this lookbook, I styled 3 different types of denim jackets: my fitted jacket, my oversized jacket, and the latest piece added into my collection, my DIY distressed, denim jacket.

Which look would you rock?

I’d love to know how you typically style your denim jacket. Comment down below & tell me!

How To: DIY Distressed Denim Jacket & OOTD

Happy Saturday:

My initial plan was to get this post up yesterday, but to be completely honest, school has been seriously kicking my butt; And I know it’s only going to get worse as the semester progresses.

I will survive. Glendaly, you will survive.

I talked about making this video a year ago on my YouTube channel, when I first started seeing distressed denim jackets everywhere. I loved the looked, but hated the price tag; some places were, and I’m sure still are, charging hundreds for this type of denim jacket. It’s insane.

It’s insane because, from the moment I laid eyes on this jacket, I knew I could recreate it myself. The only con about that is that it’s a bit of a tedious project. But good things come to those who wait, and slow & steady always win. Putting in the time and effort guaranteed that I would have a one-of-a-kind, personalize denim jacket – something that no one would have but me. That alone made this project worth while.

In total, this specific denim jacket took me 4 sessions, an hour to roughly 2 hours long each session. Am I in love with it? Was it worth it? Yes, and definitely yes.

Here’s how I DIY’ed & distressed my thrifted denim jacket:

Thank you so much for stopping by.

‘Till Monday.
