Top 8 Thrifting Tips From Your Friendly Native New Yorker.

So you want to start thrifting, ay’? I am a believer that everyone should become part of the #thriftsquad – not only is it budget friendly, but in a world where mass production is the norm, thrifting is one of the easiest ways to help promote recycling. To help with your new vintage venture, or to expand your strategy of thrifting, here a few of my favorite thrifting tips:

SLOW & STEADY ALWAYS WIN.

Patience is a virtue. It may seem weird that I have patience as the first tip for thrifting, but in order to find those gems your friends are always flaunting, you need to be okay with committing a chunk of time to browse and shop. The best pieces are always the ones that are hidden. Be ready to spend a few hours, a full afternoon or evening, dedicated to searching through used clothes. It’s totally worth it, promise.

DIGGIN’ DAYS AREN’T OVER.

When thrifting, it’s okay to check every single hanger from every single section. This is a part of the equation in finding those gem pieces. That funky little boys graphic can totally work as your new go-to crop. & Those men tees are PERFECT for the latest oversized-tee-as-dresses trend. The whole store is your playground, go ahead and dig for days.

ENERGY TIP.

If you’re like me, you are extremely dedicated to making sure you are never hangry, ever. Going thrifting is no excuse to ditch breakfast or lunch. This is actually the perfect opportunity to catch up with your home girl who you haven’t seen in almost a year. Brunch date & thrifting? Yes and yes. Oh, and of course keeping snacks in your bag is a MUST. Nuts and granola are my go-to snacks, they always provide that little boost of energy.

BASIC IS OKAY WHEN THRIFTING.

I hate feeling basic, especially when it comes to my outfit choices. However, when dressing basic, it is easier to try things on over your clothes. My typical go-to outfit is tights and a cami/fitted top. Feel free to add a spunky outerwear piece to keep you from crying about the basic look; trust me though, it’ll definitely be easier for those thrift shops that have no fitting rooms. Thank you, Salvation Army.

WILL WE MEET AGAIN?

Try to imagine if you’re really going rock that dress, top or pants more than once. This is a general shopping tip, but it’s one that I love to emphasize when thrifting because when something’s only a buck or two, it’s easy to say “Why not?” I’m guilty of this too and it’s something I’m still trying to work on. If you can’t imagine at least 3 different ways to style one piece, say no!

I CAVED: BUT IT WAS ONLY A DOLLAR!

One of my favorite things to do when I realize that I haven’t worn a piece of clothing at all is posting it up on the selling app Poshmark. Here, you can swap or sell your clothes with fellow gals who are also dealing with overflowing closets. #thestruggleisreal It’s a great way to join the revolution on recycling your clothes, and the extra cash never hurts. There are a few other apps, too: depop and vinted are a few other popular ones. If you think your pieces are vintage shop worthy – you can even create an entire Etsy page dedicated to your one-of-a-kind vintage finds. The possibilities are truly endless.

TRADING LOCALLY.

If you have a great group of gal pals, feel free to trade amongst each other. You never know the treasures that are hiding in your besties closet.

DIY.

One of my favorite ways to force myself to wear a random piece that I have yet to rock is definitely customizing it to my liking. Distressing denim, cropping tees, adding patches and bleaching can really make you want to show off that one-of-a-kind piece all the time. I don’t know about you, but I LOVE rocking DIY’ed clothing – it’s one of the coolest ways to rock your personality.

I hope you find that your next thrift trip is successful after reading this list of tips. Do you have any tips not listed here? Feel free to list them in the comment section down below! I’m always down with trying out new tricks at the thrift shop!

Denim Diary: Vintage Maxi Dress.

Happy Wednesday:

I am a Flea Queen.

walking

I still can’t believe I managed to snag up this Vintage Denim Maxi Dress for only 3 bucks! It was the inspiration behind my month long denim outfits – of course, it was only natural that I save the best ensemble for last.

Embracing the chic Alexa Chung vibes from this dress was a bit scary, I don’t ever really consider myself chic, but when I was walking around flaunting this dress, I felt amazing. I’m always impressed when a piece of clothing ups my mood significantly – it’s a reminder of the true power that fashion carry and the reason why I dedicate so much of my time too styling.

Fashion is love. Fashion is life.

To keep up with the chic, vintage vibes, I decided to add my Old Navy mules – I am a little sadden though because they definitely left a blister on my toe. In their defense, they are a half size too small. Y’all know I’m obsessed with my chocker scarves, so of course I used it as simple pop of color & topped off the look with my pink Fringe cross body.

Life Update:

This denim filled month was supposed to be over last week of June, but things on my end have gotten a bit wonky again! I am about to start job 2 in a few weeks and weirdly, feel this urge to clean up my home life to better fit my new lifestyle. Things have been on a constant roll of change and I am seriously blessed. I just need a few more weeks to get in the hang of things – no worries though! I WILL be coming back stronger than ever.

I’m also in the works of taking my blog to the next step by self hosting. That should be ready and done by the time I come back. Oh & another reason I need a break? I have a vending event at a local Flea on June 22nd. I REALLY need to put more of my time and energy there & in order to do that, I need to take a break from the Blogging & YouTube.

I definitely don’t mind the breather: I need to get my life in order to properly give my platforms lots of love.

Sending all of my love your way! I hope you had a fantastic 4th of July weekend. I’ll catch you soon.

Peace. Love. Harmony.

Try-On Thrift Haul. Fall ’15. | Video

Happy Wednesday:

I hope y’all are having a good week! My week’s been good, I’m feelin’ unconditionally blessed.

I haven’t gone shopping for myself in such a long time – there are just way too many priorities I have in my life to even think about going shopping for myself. But I managed to find an opportunity to do a bit of retail therapy while on the hunt for my Halloween costume. My boyfriend, daughter and I decided to dress up as a family this year, going all out as Scooby Doo & the gang. I was Velma, my boyfriend was Shaggy, and my daughter was Scooby. I’m totally in love with how our costumes turned out!

Thrift haul videos are one of my favorite types of videos to watch on YouTube, so I was super excited to bust out the camera, sit on my chair & chat about my new pieces. I do apologize if this video seems a  bit rushed – the only time I had to film was right before school! I was stuck re-filming this video due to technical issues.

Nonetheless, I’m super excited about everything I picked up. Expect to see these pieces in upcoming posts and lookbooks.
